The Curious Case of Mae Tajima

Honestly, like most Ateneo fans, I have been hoping since day one that someday , Mae Tajima will play a break out game and knock the hell out of all of us. But she's been with the Ateneo Lady Eagles for three years and she's still playing like a newbie. Maybe she'll play well in her fifth year?

I think Tajima has been given enough time to train and muscle up. She has been given enough chance to practice and develop her volleyball talent, if she really has any (I hope she does).

I hate to compare but in last Sunday's game, many fans noticed how active Jaja Santiago was. Even with that height. Even if she was not playing, she was always doing something, stretching, jumping, warming up. You can see the passion, the hunger to play a great game, the urge to help the team win. That's something that I've never seen in Tajima.

Although she scores points now and then, she lacks that fire that even newcomers like Tejada and Urdas already possess. That makes me wonder, does she really want to play? Does she really like the sport? Does she even care about her team? All right. The last one was mean, sorry.

This will sound harsh but it's been three years. If you can't learn to spike and block for three long years of playing with one of the country's strongest collegiate team, I don't know what you need to improve anymore.  Ateneo is in the brink of a fallout! I hope this never happens, but what if Valdez gets injured? Will Ateneo just settle for a 4th, 5th, 6th place after all those years of working hard to get to the finals? Adamson already has Paat. NU has Jaja. DLSU has Reyes. ADMU needs Tajima!

(Patnongon is there but well, I think she deserves her own blog post.)

So yeah, what is it with Tajima? Can somebody please reassure us Ateneo fans that she is training hard and is really working like crazy to be a strong weapon for the team? I know that nobody wants to be weak. That she most likely wants to play better too. But..

I guess what I'm saying is that, with the loss of the Fab Five, ADMU has officially become Alyssa De Manila University. And she can't do it alone. Tajima, a player gifted with height and a pretty face has to step up and do it fast. Not just for the fans, not just for the team but also for herself. She has become the victim of sarcastic tweets and FB posts of both ADMU fans and haters. Even the V-league commentators are being mean to her (I'm talking to you Sev, stop it!).

Please Tajima, if you're not doing it yet, please train harder. Please exert more effort. Please prove your worth. Do whatever it takes if you really want it. But if you continue to play lightly without plans of getting better, please bow out of the team and give your slot to some more deserving players out there. Just saying. Hundreds of girls all over the country would kill to get your spot in the Ateneo squad. Show them you deserve it.

(Disclaimer: This is not a hate post. I like Tajima just like everybody else. But I hope this reaches her. I feel so great when she scores, I just wanna see it more often. Peace out.)

  1. Wala naman talagang pag-asa yang si Tajima e. Pinapasikat lang ng mga bobong fans ng ateneo.

    1. Excuse me hindi po kami bobo kailangan lang ni tajima ng konting effort malay nyo maging katulad sya ni valdez

    2. Seriously? Are you that deluded to believe that she will suddenly transform to a Valdez-like player in her remaining years in UAAP? If you claim that you are not in any way dumb, then you might consider a more achievable predicament.

    3. I dont understand why people keep on blaming Tajima, they dont get the point for your info both tajma and reyes of lasalle are HS batch 2011 the former from addu and the latter from st scho mla, to be frank with you guys reyes was not a star player of st scho she was so slow and awkward more than tajima, when reyes entered lasalle that is where she developed her skills and agility, credit it on the excellent training program of the school. ADMU training program is a lot inferior, blame it on ka roger puro kc porma cya thats why his contract was not anymore renewed and was replaced by a veteran Thai coach. analyzing tajima the only reason why she was recruited is because of her height which is ideal in volleyball, just like most filipina we seldom see 6 footers who are athletic and thats understandable coz God made us short people, the only exception of course are the santiago sisters, penetrente, bernal, and balse, but let us not blame God for making us short people, lets go back to tajima, the gentle giantess from Davao is not athletic but more of a ramp model and lets not blame tajima for that, coz its her God given body constitution.Any right thinking coach who would recruit her will clearly see that because of her height and tender age she will be an asset to the team its just a matter of transforming her from the rampa to become a deadly amazona, which coach ramil of lasalle did to mika reyes. Tajima should have been given a separate training module compared to that given to valdez. cainglet gervacio, ho etc, if you will just click the youtube you can see the training program of the japanese and thai volleyball team, this program should have been given to her when she entered ateneo, i understand that she was only given this kind of program after ka roger left. The problem with ka roger is that he has no more time to develop new and young talents, gusto nya pag pasok ng bagong player kasing galing na ni valdez, maizo, bernal et al all he has to do is just sit down and do the coaching. With the new training program which tajima is undergoing she has increased her leaping ability, she can now do the running attack just like what dindin is doing, her lateral movement and footwork have improved greatly and her blocking prowess is now superb, in short she has developed self confidence. For your info also, in one of their tune up games last august against meralco which they won in 5 sets guess who was the top scorer, the crowd favorite of course, the gentle giantess of Davao city, Tajimae with 17 pts and can you imagine 7 blocks. With 5 tall deadly rookies plus a vastly improved tajima, ahomiro, patnongon and alyssa de manila and a veteran Thai coach you can now bet on the Lady Eagles this season 76 uaap

  3. Magaling naman talaga si Tajima. Kailangan niya lang ng PUSH. (If you know what I mean.) Hindi siya magiging member ng Blue Eagles V Squad kung hindi siya magaling. Right?

  4. Height lang siguro niya ang kinoconsider ni Gorayeb. Pero tama din yung writer. Parang kulang nga si Tajima sa effort. Parang wala lang sa kanya yung laro. Di katulad nina Alyssa at Dindin na buwis buhay.

  5. Sayang ang babaeng ito she stands 6'2 but then hindi masyadong nagagamit yes she may score pero not that efficient sometimes pangdecoy nga lang. Hello 3 years na Ka Roger dapat nagimprove na yan look at Reyes,Pablo,Galang,Tunay etc. etc. Sila yung mga kasabayan niya and look naghahalimaw na sila sa court even they are still sophomores, IMO kung wala na sigurong mapiga sakanya dapat ng palitan kunin na ang mas deserving at mas makakatulong sa team and Yes height is might but you cannot teach height ;) Oh by the way Im not an Ale fan just a concern citizen :)

  9. Yeah. She'll be famous not because of her skills but her pretty face. Parang si Ho lang. lol.

  10. Ho is both pretty and good. May naitutulong siya sa team. Inggit much?

    1. I don't think Gretchen Ho is good. Her blocking and spiking efficiency is really low. Did not even contribute much in scoring. Wondered why Gorayeb did not replace her. Looking forward to the new ADMU team with a much stronger middle blockers. I think they're the team to beat right now. Hope they'll be able to defend their title. Patnongon should improve her game. Anyways Gopico is well now. Will Amy play as middle still or as utility? Morente played well as utility/opposite. They should have another outside hitter who is as strong and efficient as Valdez. De Jesus is a strong spiker and can jump high but is too short. When she's in front that's when the opposing team can earn more points. Go Ateneo with your one big fight. Heart Strong!

  14. Atleast, little by little nakakatulong siya. Di ngalang ganun kadalas. I hope next season maging mas effective pa siya as a middle.

  24. well. you do not need to compare a person with that of skill of another person. I wish that this post had reached tajima for her to have an inspiration to work out. we cannot judge a person, we are not God. We are just human like her. So please stop bashing. and hundreds of great high school volleyball players, why didn't coach recruit them? It is just Tajima has her own talents. :)
