First let me just share this quote:

I think this perfectly describes what's happening to the NU Lady Bulldogs right now. At first, no one really cared about them and they had no popular player except maybe for Cai Nepomuceno.
Then came UAAP Season 75 and the once quiet and literal underdogs became fearsome Bulldogs who instigated major changes in the usual UAAP volleyball rankings. They became a threat to the Big FOUR: DLSU, ADMU, UST and ADU. They finished the season with an amazing Fourth place finish knocking out crowd-favorite UST and 3 of their players getting 4 individual awards: Jen Reyes as Best Digger and Best Receiver, Aiko Urdas as Rookie of the Year and Myla pablo as Best attacker.
So why is there a lot of hate against them? Three factors.
First, Dindin Santiago. This powerful attacker was "stolen" from the UST Tigresses. I'm sure there are a dozen better words for what happened but that's how I see it (sorry). Many UST fans were not happy with Dindin's transfer and more were annoyed when she lead the Bulldogs' in kicking UST out of the Final Four.
Second, Myla Pablo. I'm not sure why she already has so many haters. In fact, in our poll entitled "Who is the MOST HATED player of all", she came in second after Fille Cainglet with 23% of votes. Her twitter account is even protected due to her many haters. I think this all started on their first game against ADMU in the UAAP 75. Many Ateneo fans were not amused at how this newcomer Pablo was staring down at their idols. In their second meeting, she played a bad game which many people thought was due to her detractors. Until now, many fans are picking on her. She even has a trademark word now, "spikeng".
Third, they turned from nobodies into championship contenders in an instant! Nobody hates the ones at the bottom, in fact I don't think I've seen any hate tweets about UP or UE. And NU will not have a problem with these haters if they continued playing badly and stayed at the bottom. But if you want greatness, you have to put up with the hate. Top teams like DLSU and ADMU get hate tweets ALL THE TIME.
And as for today's fight against Adamson, I fear that the Lady Bulldogs will again get bullied by the crowd. For some reason, ADMU and UST fans have chosen to support the Lady Falcons in their fight against NU. Maybe because they seem to be the underdogs compared to the formidable NU squad with their 2 giants. Well, I admit I am in love with Pau Soriano and how she leads her team to sweet victories. And when I watch the game later, I will cheer for her. However, I will also cheer for these Bulldogs. They deserve it. Dindin Santiago is obviously giving her everything in every game. Myla Pablo, Aiko Urdas and Aganon also deserve praise for how excellently thay have been playing. Jen Reyes will deliver with or without cheers of course. I hope to see Cai Nepomuceno play later. So calling on NU fans, come cheer the girls later! Show some love!
The bottomline is, there really is no good reason to hate these girls. Maybe there are times when Pablo or Santiago become too "maangas" or "mayabang" on the court but I think, well, I hope that they are not like that in real life. (update: @VolleyballDonya says @iamMylaPablo is genuinely nice off the court.) Comments?

ReplyDeleteSooo true.. about the dindin santiago transfer. I think that’s one reason why UST fans hate NU. bitter kung sabihin. And also true that they become too "maangas" on the court sometimes.. But a really good team indeed..

Sa real fans, we welcome this for this will improve the competitiveness of RP volleyball as a whole. Fantards lang naman ang gumagawa ng issue. Ako i admit to be a ust fan, but i know how to appreciate other players of other teams. We have just to support the team we love, win or lose, but we must also know to how to respect the talent of others. Im excited sa professional league kasi maghahalo halo na players from different school. Tignan ko lng if magalit pa kyo kina myla or fille if nasama sila sa team or players na idol niyo. Just my opinion guys

Nagpapakita lng siguro sila ng pagka matapang. Chosss. HEHE. Pero i admit i like Fille Saint Merced Cainglet. ShE's the best. Even though marami syang Hater. Part talaga ng laro yan. Hahahahaha.. :))).ganyan talaga ang buhay.

ReplyDeleteNice point of view. Im a fan of DLSU and UST pero saludo din ako sa galing ng NU players. Mali din nman na siraan ung ibang team porket fan ka ng opponent nila. Kasi karamihan din nman skanila mgkakaibigan kahit magkalaban ung team nila. Nagkaka-issue lang dahil sa haters or should i say, fans ng ibang team.

ReplyDeleteNice blog. I'm a UST fan but I don't hate NU. The point of being a fan is supporting your team through thick and thin and not hating on other players. Having stronger opponents brings out the best in the team that you support. What's really important and the best part of being a fan is seeing your team improving and eventually becoming the strongest. Sabi nga nila, "bilog ang bola". And that's what makes this sport more interesting. :)

ReplyDeleteYup. Very well said. Even me, I didn't like NU when I first saw them play because They're too maangas and mayabang nga when they play. I mean I'm not a hater nor a fan of them (before). But being maangas and mayabang are just simply my first impression to the lady Bulldogs back then. But when i saw their game against ADMU at the shakey's v-league, I got impressed. Imagine? They defeated Ateneo lady eagles which I didn't expect because I thought they weren't that good naman. And I also got impressed to their other games in the Shakey's v-league. So surprisingly I was wrong and that game which i didn't expect lead me to love their team also. Sooo now I just love them. They're too tough kase. :)

DeleteWala sa mga players ang problem. Sa mga fans meron. Minsan kasi ang tao walang "ACCEPTANCE" at "SPORTSMANSHIP"minsan pa nga eh "JUDGMENTAL" masyado ang tao. Just like yung ninakaw daw si Dindin sa UST. May mga fans na nagsasabi noon na ang rason daw kung bakit umalis si DinDin is dahil ayaw niya sa UST. Pero hindi naman yun yung rason diba? Dahil nga sa residence.
ReplyDeleteI am a huge fan of NU lalo na nung nag start maglaro si Myla Pablo nung season 74 kahit 7th place lang sila nun. Bihira lang kasi na may schoolmate akong maglaro sa uaap tapos ka-team pa ng friend ko sa varsity nung highschool. Gusto ko sabihin na she is really nice in person di gaya ng mga binibintang ng iba dyan. Noon nga kapag nanonood ako ng game nila sabi ko sa friend ko bakit walang reaksyon si myla pag nakakascore sya kaya nga na-surprise ako ngayon na maangas na sya maglaro unlike dun sa reksyon nung iba na makapang-judge akala mo kilala mo na sya eh hindi nga nila sya nakitang maglaro noon. So yun lang gusto ko sabihin na wag tayong mag judge ng iba lalo na kapag hindi natin sila kilala personally. BTW favorite ko din pala DLSU and UST:)
ReplyDeleteLet's face it. The stars from the different schools are all from UST HS. They were nurtured and trained there. Perhaps they wanted better opportunities or whatever but the fact remains that they all came from UST HS. Not an alumni of UST HS but that remains a fact. It's just good to know that they are in good terms and still have that bonding even if they are playing for different schools.
